Most pool leaks can be spotted near the filtration pipe area or in a crevice near the pool lights.

Types of Pool Leaks:

The three major concern areas for a pool leak include; structural leaks, fitting leaks, and plumbing leaks.

Structural Leaks:

Sometimes the vessel of the pool itself is not engineered correctly by professionals. This leads to problems in the future, by causing cracks in the pool shell, which are not easy to fix and need immediate attention.

Fitting Leaks:

The components such as lights, skimmers, and jets, are to be fitted carefully into the surface of the pool vessel without any chance of error. If the fitting is not done as per standards, there is a good opportunity for pool leaks.

Plumbing Leaks:

Underground leaks are caused due to corrosion or movement in the ground, damaging the plumbing or floor surface. If you think there is a leak of such kind, call for help soon.

Plumbing leaks are caused by the movement of the system. Settling in the ground, for example, can cause systems to move, creating a leak in the plumbing. Corrosion is another issue that may cause a swimming pool's plumbing system to leak.

Here are some signs that indicate a pool leak:

  • Losing 1/4 inches of water in less than 24 hours.
  • Having to constantly refill the pool.
  • Loose tiles or cracks on the deck of the pool.
  • The automatic filter is working overtime to keep up with the required water content.
  • Algae is seen in the pool, even after chemical treatment.

To determine whether the loss of water is due to evaporation or due to a leak, a simple bucket test can be undertaken.

Bucket test step-wise:

  • Let the pool water be at its normal level.
  • Fill a bucket with water from the pool.
  • Place the bucket of water on the steps of the pool, preferably the first or second step.
  • The top of the bucket should be slightly above the pool water level.
  • Check the water level outside the bucket.
  • Turn off the pump system and now check the water level on the rim of the bucket.
  • Keep the pump turned-off for 24 hours and keep observing the level.
  • Re-start the pump activity post 24 hours.
  • Repeat the test again and mark the water level.
  • If you identify that the level of water in the bucket is more than the level of water marked on the outside of the bucket, then it is an indication of water loss due to leakages.

Besides the bucket test, one can also add food coloring near the problem area. If the leak is present, the food color will get sucked into the crack, which is a confirmation that the leak exists.

Please note:

There should be no swimming activity while the test is being undertaken. Make sure that it isn’t raining while the test is ongoing. Ensure that the filter’s autofill system is also turned off.

Repairing Pool Leaks

Concrete Pool leaks can be expensive depending on the gravity of damage that has already been done.

Leaks near pool fittings:

For minor leaks near the pool lighting or faceplate area, a silicone solution is applied evenly around the cracks to stop the leak immediately.

Leaks related to plumbing:

Compared to the leaks near the fittings, this is a more complex problem and needs to be addressed only by professionals like Bossneo. This could involve digging the foundation of the pool and replacing the damaged pipes.

Leak at the main drain area:

For this kind of repair work, the only option is to fix a new drain and get rid of the old faulty drain. This again has to be assisted under the watchful eyes of professionals.

Skimmer Leaks:

A temporary solution for this is to apply silicone to fix the leak. However, in the long run, the advisable option is to replace the skimmer and get a new one affixed.

Tips For Preventing Pool Leaks

For preventing pool leaks, there is no such shortcut or secret. The only thing to be kept in mind is that the installation needs to be done correctly in the first place so that the pool can withstand the test of time, weather conditions, and usage.

Ensure that:

  • A proper pressure test is done to test the plumbing and to see to it that it is tightly secured.
  • All the pool fittings must be properly placed by professionals.
  • The pool must be leveled and engineered correctly by experienced experts.

A concrete pool is rather expensive to maintain as compared to the fiberglass pools. The fiberglass pools are low on maintenance and are structured in a way allowing it to sustain itself over long periods.
